Setting up Port Forwarding in Plume Home

How to set up the Port Forwarding feature

Updated over a week ago

What is Port Forwarding?

Port forwarding (opening ports) allows you to open specific ports in the router's firewall needed by some online services to communicate with devices on your network. A port has an internal and external value called the port number. Multiple external hosts can use the same external port number, but each internal port must be different; this allows Network Address Translation (NAT) to identify the destination for inbound traffic.

Port forwarding is necessary when you have issues related to a restricted NAT, in online gaming, communications, and file-sharing services.

Where do I find Port Forwarding settings?

Manual setup can be tedious if you set rules for multiple services and devices. UPnP allows services to automatically set up port forwarding rules, although you can manually set up port forwarding instead.

You should not enable UPnP and set up port forwarding simultaneously.

Because you are opening/forwarding ports in the firewall, port forwarding must be set on your router. When a Plume network operates in bridge mode, you must set up port forwarding rules using the admin console of the upstream router. If your Plume network is in router mode, port forwarding can be set up using the Plume Home app.

How to set up port forwarding with the Plume Home app

Before you begin, gather the port numbers and protocols the service needs and reserve an IP for the local device.

  1. Open the Settings page and tap on the Network tile.

  2. Scroll down the page and tap on the IP reservations button.

  3. From the list, choose the device you need to apply the port forwarding rule to.

    • If you do not see any devices listed, reserve an IP for your device(s) first.

  4. Enter in a Port name for the rule, External port, and Internal port numbers, and choose the Protocol.

    • If you only need to open the port use the same port number for the internal port as you did for the external port.

    • Using port ranges is not currently supported by the Plume Home app. Individual rules are needed for each port you need to forward.

  5. Tap on Add to save the rule, which will be shown in the list of Port assignments for the device.

  6. If you need to set more forwarding rules for that device, use the Add a Port button.
